About Cranleigh School, Surrey

School Overview

Cranleigh is an independent co-educational boarding and day school in the heart of the Surrey Hills. Set in over 240 acres by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, yet only an hour from London, where its students regularly enjoy the Capital’s art, drama and other exhibitions, Cranleigh is a vibrant school that is large enough for diverse opportunities and small enough for every pupil to be an individual who is supported and encouraged, whatever activities they undertake.  Cranleigh aims to provide young people with: the strength to succeed; the wisdom to make informed choices; resilience in the face of failure or difficulty; and the insight to recognise their privilege and to shape the future culture of the world through lives of service and leadership.

Arising from the School’s Christian heritage and cultural background, at the heart of a Cranleigh education are four central values of Service, Relationships, Leadership , and Excellence.

Boarding Overview

The Boarding house system forms the foundation upon which our pupils’ well-being and sense of community are built. We have eight single-sex boarding houses and although we welcome both boarding and day pupils Cranleigh is full boarding in spirit, with 75% of our pupils currently boarding. All houses follow a similar structure, with both a Housemaster or Housemistress and a Deputy who live on-site, often with their family, plus a Non-Resident Deputy with overall responsibility for the day pupils in the house. Each house also has two full-time Matrons. The primary focus of Cranleigh’s boarding ethos is to provide opportunities to pupils that would be unavailable to them at home. Fourth formers and others new to house life often comment on the friendliness between pupils and especially between year groups. Leavers will always testify to the lasting friendships they made at Cranleigh.

Extracurricular Overview

The breadth of experience is paramount at Cranleigh and there really is something for everyone from Sport, Music, Drama, Creative Arts, Duke of Edinburgh, CCF, service and charitable activities, and many different societies. Our philosophy in all of these spheres is one of striving for excellence and elite-level performance but just as importantly it is one of full participation with pupils at all levels being given the opportunity to perform or represent the school. Cranleigh has an extensive range of extremely high-standard sporting facilities including two strength and conditioning centres; 12 grass football and rugby pitches; four Astro turfs; six Eton Fives courts; five cricket squares; 28 tennis courts; a double sports centre with two indoor netball courts; indoor cricket nets; a cricket-specific outdoor all-year-round bubble; 16 badminton courts; a 9-hole golf course; an equestrian centre; a dance studio; and an indoor swimming pool
