About Hurtwood House
School Overview
Hurtwood combines the best elements of the traditional boarding school system with the best elements of the modern sixth-form college to create a wholly unique and individual establishment.
While breaking new ground educationally, it has retained traditional values and has created an inspirational but safe stepping-stone between school and university.
This is a school driven by a passion for creativity and a respect for academic rigour, a small school with a distinctive voice that is less formal and less institutional than traditional public schools.
As a fully residential school, our first concern is to provide students with a safe, structured, caring, and happy community, a home from home. That is why we place so much emphasis on our House structure.
Students live in one of five country houses or their lodges, some on the campus and some nearby.
Our school is located at Holmbury St. Mary, Surrey, England, just 1.5 hours from central London.
Boarding Overview
Each House has a Housemaster who lives in and a team of House Tutors. The Housemaster is the link between the school and your parents and is their first point of contact on all academic and pastoral matters.
The House staff are responsible for looking after you, monitoring your academic progress, providing guidance, and creating a warm, supportive, and organised family unit. We like to think of it as a sense of ‘structured informality’.
All of the working day is spent on campus and you are transported back to your House after supper every evening by the House staff.

What is The Enigma Programme?
Well, put simply, Enigma is what most other schools might call “enrichment” or “additional studies”. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons Enigma enhances your day-to-day world of curriculum, offers you experiential learning through a wide variety of diverse courses, and provides interesting and challenging alternatives to your academic studies, ranging from recreation and lifestyle to fitness and creative and performing arts.
Enigma Clubs range from Dance Classes, Animation, Podcasting, Sign Language, Languages, Special FX Makeup, Coding, Investor Trading, Musical Theatre, Sewing, and many more. These, alongside our various sports such as Football, Golf, Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Mountain Biking, Netball, Hockey, and more, offer a wide and diverse range of activities and opportunities.

Coming from Hong Kong, a country with limited performance opportunities, I was looking for a school that had the facilities my previous school didn’t have. A school that would allow me to study dance and theatre at a higher level, rather than just as an extra curriculum activity.
After discovering Hurtwood, I read about the amazing theatre opportunities and the large range of dance classes offered here and, unlike any other school, Hurtwood excelled both in academics and the performing arts. Which was an important factor for me when choosing the ‘right’ school!
Hurtwood has become such a big part of my life after being here for two years. There is so much I have enjoyed about going here.
Surprisingly, I love the hectic timetable we get because it means that there is always something going on everyday, whether it’s rehearsals or activities or Enigma sessions.
With the freedom that you get from everyone, you can be your own person and you can be an individual. I love doing the productions and I like how everyone has different talents in different areas, I love talking to new people and learning new skills.
I love the sport at Hurtwood too and I have played in the football team since I came, I feel honored to take the role of captaincy next year and I will hopefully lead the team to more victories.
I feel that, especially in Theatre studies, I have learned a huge amount at my last school we would learn different techniques and we would devise different pieces but here I have learned about all the main practitioners that have made acting what it is today.
I have learned so much more than I thought was possible and I am shocked at how much goes into acting and how much you need to do when you perform to make it more powerful and engaging.
