Mill Hill School
School Overview
Mill Hill School is perfectly located in north west London in a very green and safe area but still only 30 minutes to central London.
Our learning community brings boys and girls of different cultures and backgrounds together and helps them to understand the importance of respect in their everyday lives. Mill Hill’s educational philosophy is based on offering breadth and balance, complementing the academic with the co-curricular, the technological with the traditional and individuality with a sense of community.
Our boarding community, consisting of 190 boarders from over 30 nationalities, is extremely welcoming, friendly and inclusive. Mill Hill School’s sports and music facilities are state of the art. Our international boarders transfer to top UK universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and LSE.
Mill Hill offers a broad education, where academic excellence is complemented by cultural, sporting and social development. Hard work, self-criticism, enthusiasm and loyalty are encouraged in order to support our aim of developing leadership and the acceptance of responsibility. Although the School is a non-conformist Christian Foundation, girls and boys of all denominations and faiths are welcomed.
We firmly believe that the environment in which children are taught and learn is of paramount importance. We are privileged to have a school set in the most beautiful parkland setting, quite unique in London. The teaching facilities at Mill Hill are also of the highest order where traditional buildings are mixed with modern additions.
Mill Hill School was founded in 1807, when its founders wisely chose its location on the top of a hillside for its fresh air, safety and natural beauty. Mill Hill School occupies a 120-acre site, part of which formed the gardens of Ridgeway House, the home of noted botanist Peter Collinson. Collinson was one of the most significant importers of rare and exotic plants to English gardens. Many of the species that he introduced to Mill Hill in the 18th Century continue to flourish today in the grounds of the School and do much to provide the unique and beautiful setting the School enjoys.
The school was set up by merchants and ministers from Christian non conformist backgrounds in order to provide a place of learning for the boys from their communities: the “ancient” public schools at this time required all their pupils to belong to the Church of England. They decided to place their school outside of London: their foresight has provided generations of Millhillians with surroundings which are peaceful, secure and rural and yet within minutes of links to Central London.
Initially a boys only school, Mill Hill welcomed girls into the Sixth Form in 1975 and went fully co-educational in 1997.
Boarding Overview
Mill Hill is a fantastic and unique place, with spacious countryside surroundings in a wonderful 150-acre campus, yet easily accessible from Central London. It really does offer the best of both worlds. The strong sense of community in our Boarding Community is tangible and boarders have a real sense of ‘home-away-from-home’ while they are living and working together with us.
As an international community, students are given the advantage of intercultural respect and understanding, preparing them as global citizens. Our Boarding Staff are committed to providing the best possible environment for boarders.
Each led by a resident Housemaster or Housemistress, our four boarding houses provide for 195 full and weekly boarders from both Mill Hill School and Mill Hill International, where boarders are able to rest, relax, work and socialise. Boarders’ Voice is important to us, and our ethos encompasses a sense of acceptance, empathy, and mutual endeavour. We have a mixture of single, twin and triple rooms across the 4 houses, with each housing pupils from Year 9 through to Year 13.
What their Students Say
Evita joined the one-year GCSE programme at Mill Hill International in 2019 and then transferred to Mill Hill School for A Levels in 2020. She graduated this year.
“I loved my time at Mill Hill School. I was very happy with the teaching and boarding at Mill Hill School. I am confident that Mill Hill School has given me the confidence to set up my own business in future.”
I really enjoyed the staff and the facilities. Boarding gave me a great routine and a very nice community. I learned a lot and had also quite some fun. Boarding allowed me to immerse myself into Mill Hill School life and my studies, whilst still living a healthy social life. Most of my teachers were really good, particularly Dr. Damberg who taught me biology in Upper Sixth.
I liked that students were offered a wide range of extra-curricular programmes, as well as additional academic activities to further our learning. For example, I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and the RSC Chemistry Olympiad, both of which helped me bridge the large jump in difficulty between A-level and university-level chemistry.
The teaching quality in general was great. Some teachers would even go above and beyond the syllabus to ensure that students reached a deeper level of understanding. I particularly liked Ms Ashraf’s teaching style, her classrooms were always active and fun.
The boarding staff lived among us at Ridgeway House, helping us complete day-to-day tasks. We were like a big family. Spending two years as a full-time boarder really helped me transition to independent living at university.
Mill Hill created a massive sense of community and made me felt like being home especially coming far from home to be a boarder. The diverse activities have allowed me to expand and develop interests in different areas, giving me an all rounded experience before university where I continued to develop these interests further.
Most teachers were extremely kind and supportive in Mill Hill, lessons are lively and interesting and are willing to give a helping hand at all times and I always felt comfortable to raise questions. I have managed to maintain good relationships with almost all of the teachers and Housemasters that I have encountered but special thanks to three of my tutors, Ms Ferson, Mr. Halford and Mr. Watterson. Mr. Fryer, my housemaster in Ridgeway. Despite just taken over the role as Housemaster at that time, He has been really supportive throughout the year, I could always go and talk to him, and he gave me lots of advises whenever I had a problem or question.
Everything is pretty much taken care of, activities wise, lots to do both during the weekdays after school, but also weekend activities within the boarding community.
The general experience with Mill Hill has been enriching and fulfilling, there were lots of ups and downs but fortunately there were friends and staffs to support me throughout my journey, and I have definitely become a more responsible and all rounded person ever since.
I really liked the student/teacher ratio at Mill Hill School and also the facilities. It was great meeting people from various countries and cultures, their unique personalities and I also really liked my House Master Mr. Turner. Mill Hill School had a huge impact on my life. I went through a roller coaster of emotions but at the end of the day it made me a better and a more confident person.
“I was very happy at Mill Hill School. I particularly liked the teachers. My Psychology teacher, Ms Kleimberg and my Business teacher, Mr Smith were my favourite teachers.
I also very much liked the boarding staff. They were very welcoming and friendly.”
