About Scarborough College
School Overview
We are a thriving boarding and day school, steeped in history, in a beautiful location, enjoying close proximity to the North York Moors, the Wolds and the Yorkshire Coast.
At Scarborough College, we believe that all pupils have hidden talents, and through our exciting curriculum your child will be inspired to discover a love of learning, develop a ‘can do’ attitude and become the best possible version of themselves.
We offer an outstanding education in a climate of aspiration, from Pre School at 3 years old, through GCSEs and the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Sixth Form, as well as offering an exceptional range of co-curricular activities. Our nationally recognized Yorkshire Grit program is a vital part of the curriculum designed to ensure that pupils are challenged beyond the classroom and become resilient, collaborative, compassionate and adventurous individuals.
The recent inspection report emphasizes that Scarborough College is a family; our staff are committed to providing an individualized journey for every pupil.
Boarding Overview
Boarding at Scarborough College is so much more than having your room next to the school. It is about becoming and being part of a small family. When we talk about boarding the SC way, we talk about more than just being enrolled at a boarding school. Joining Scarborough College as a boarding pupil means becoming part of a boarding community and by joining Scarborough College, you become part of the town and you become part of Yorkshire. It means waking up with sand in between your toes and Yorkshire grit coursing through your veins. Boarding the SC way is about being at home.
Each of the boarding houses is staffed by two live-in families and/or members of staff who provide round-the-clock care and supervision in a family setting. In addition, each house is visited, Mondays through Thursdays, by an academic visiting tutor. The tutor is on duty alongside the Housemistress/Housemaster or assistant and provides extra academic supervision and support from 6pm to 10pm.
Scarborough College does not have exeat weekends and the vast majority of boarding pupils (more than 90%) are full boarders, including the majority of UK boarders.
We organize weekend trips every weekend and during most weekday evenings after Prep. Weekend activities include sports activities, cultural trips, shopping visits and larger trips such as Manchester and London.
Our school sports are hockey, netball and tennis for girls; cricket, hockey and rugby for boys. In addition, we have two centers of excellence for cricket and golf. Other important sports at the school are athletics, equestrians, football and rounders.
Boarding pupils and pupils choosing sports on their enrichment program timetable play a variety of other sports, ranging from basketball to surfing and from cross country to volleyball.
We offer a bespoke and unique program called Yorkshire Grit which is for all of our Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils including surfing, sailing, paddle boarding, yoga, mindfulness, boot camp and so much more. To find out more about Yorkshire Grit, please visit our Website.
We are a licensed DofE center and have almost a quarter of all students on roll participating in Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze, Silver and Gold expeditions.
Scarborough College holds an excellent reputation for, and commitment to, Drama and Theatre Studies. This is embedded in our dedication to developing student creativity in terms of independent thinking, confident communication and reflective learning. We believe that through our high-quality teaching, we nurture curiosity, enable collaborative learning and encourage creative performance in all our students.
All students study music within the curriculum throughout the Prep School and up to Year 9. They are introduced to the basic principles of Western musical styles as well as learn about the different musical traditions from around the world. Music is offered as an option at both GCSE and IB levels.
