About Wellington School
School Overview
Wellington’s ethos rests on three principles: building outstanding relationships, the pursuit of excellence and a love of learning.
We believe that children who feel safe and secure at school will feel empowered to excel, to be the best they can be. Supportive staff encourage students to aim high and to work hard as they strive for their goals.
Curiosity and a desire to engage with the world are central to our approach to learning. Achieving the best possible grades is obviously crucial, but we believe that there is a lot more to a premium quality education than measurable academic outcomes. Our remarkable co-curricular programme offers students of all ages and abilities the opportunity to get involved, and we want every child to develop those personal skills they will need to thrive in a competitive and increasingly complex world.
We are a proudly process-oriented school. While celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students, our focus is on the processes which yield these great results. School should be a joyful time and youngsters ought to feel confident as they grow into adults. Wellingtonians go on to do great things; they leave us confident but not arrogant, ambitious but not entitled.
Boarding Overview
The boarding community is central to the rich and diverse environment that is Wellington School. Our co-educational and multi-cultural ethos gives our pupils the opportunity to gain a greater respect and understanding for people of any gender, all races, faiths and nationalities that reflects society today.
175 boys and girls, accommodated in 5 boarding houses, are provided with the perfect environment in which to explore their academic potential, develop their social relationships and unearth personal skills and qualities that enhance success in a wide range of cultural, sporting and artistic activities.
A dedicated team of boarding staff provides the guidance and support to individuals, and a busy boarding life ensures constant challenge, opportunity and excitement while still allowing quiet time to rest and reflect.
Strong bonds of friendship and spirit unite the community. Good humour, empathy for others, kindness, leadership skills and personal resilience are characteristics developed through the boarding experience.
We work hard to create a ‘home from home’ environment where boarders are supported to develop good relationships with pupils and staff, based on a culture of mutual trust and respect.
Extracurricular Overview
Beyond the classroom, students have ample opportunity find interesting ways to spend their time, apart from sport. Clubs, at lunchtimes or Saturday mornings, are laid on as an extension to academic or creative subjects, broadening into politics, creative writing and film club. Outdoor education offers wide opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, climbing, caving DofE and Ten Tors,.
This is a very sporty school where the traditional termly timetable of rugby and hockey carries on for two terms using indoor sessions or as rugby 7’s; cricket and tennis for everyone in the summer. School is especially strong in cricket – currently over 30 players at county level. Lots else on offer for those keen on minority sports (rowing, volleyball, modern pentathlon, triathlete for example) as well as yoga &circuit training. Facilities are great, including an indoor pool and Olympic standard sports complex (fencing salle, physio suite, two performance gyms).
Outstanding music and drama provision, with over 30 different ensembles, bands and choirs including a fantastic Chapel Choir. Extensive opportunities for performance, musical and vocal exams and composition and recording all genres of music, including a regular Rock Revue. Dram is extensive with many regular performances across all ages – including large-scale musicals, comedies and Shakespeare as well as LAMDA examination and many students getting into the National Youth Theatre each year.
What their Students Say
The whole sixth form experience is a privilege. There is a mutual respect between pupils and teachers with a focus on our work that makes learning more inspiring
I’m so happy with my results and very excited to be going to Oxford this autumn. None of it would have been possible without the fantastic teachers whom I was very lucky to be taught by, and the great support system the school provided me with.
